« on: July 01, 2012, 08:49:48 PM »
Wondered if anyone had experiences, good or bad of the advertised replacement seat covers advertised?

Thanks, good info, I was looking at the same. My foam isn't in bad overall shape, so don't really want to buy foam and cover from an originality point of view

Given your experience I might try a local specialist. My cover is in pretty good shape, so would be a good copy candidate

If anyone is missing seat info I have good pics of an original, both assembled and in breakdown.

Looking at the paint process - that means none under the foam, it's clear why these rot so easily in wetter climates!

Some progress potentially. Local (ish) supplier prepared to make a cover to pattern for 70 + shipping, which is pretty good for a one off. I was impressed when I was asked "did you want plain or tartan?", apparently have supplied monkeybikeuk in the past... Can also do cross welds and waterproof suede apparently. But I'm after originality for this bike, so plain with a single pipe at the edge will do nicely.

My seat base needs treating and painting, although fortunately all surface corrosion so very solid, even the pointed tags are in good shape

So I'm going to do this and see how I get on. If you want to double up based on my pattern (which is original) , happy to do so...

Here's mine, (the pieces on the foam are the fittings which go over the cover and spikes)

Thanks for the offer but 70 into Aussie dollar is a lot plus freight. I should be able to get one made local as well, but don't Have a pattern. Could you post pics of the pattern with some measurements maybe.

No problem. I'm conscious that these are expensive bikes to restore, so every little counts. For me the alternative is the source you've already tried and I only want to pay once even if its not the cheapest, if I can visit the supplier I can hopefully see the material etc. Even then it's a 3 week turnaround, so realistically it will be a month before I get it there and back

In terms of a pattern, you realise it's the existing cover right?

I'm happy to try and trace the panels, although if you're in no hurry I might get a better result from the cover supplier after they have done the same themselves. Given ,the curves and so on, I'd be unconvinced about any meaningful measurements translating into a good result. Maybe if I can get a collection of traceable panels on paper I could post (mail) them to you?? In my head is a kind of "brass rubbing" approach where you would have a impression on paper of each panel...

Very definitely original.

If you look at the picture above there are two metal pieces too and a couple of strap like folds of material. Theses were used on top of the spikes. I took lots of pics which I will upload later.

I'm 100% certain that I was the first to remove the cover and foam.

Talking of foam, have you got that part? Construction is quite strange. It's more of a top skin with a series of uprights glued in a matrix underneath to give some support.

I'll get to the template job this weekend hopefully  :)

Ok, will post a comprehensive set of pics in the info section later - can't do it from the iPad.. Sculpting from scratch will be an interesting challenge.

If and when I make it to the seat supplier I will enquire how they do the same. The "foam" isnt very foamy, more of an open cell structure. The pics will illustrate.

Anyway all cool, will get it sorted this w/e
