Horn...
« on: September 14, 2014, 11:37:26 PM »
So, I'm about to embark on a horn restoration.

Already fully stripped and cover rechromed.

Looking at the back section, has anyone replated the bracket? Is there any issue with plating the inside of the dish and then painting? What will happen to the laminated core, or do need to protect (think i do...)

All suggestions welcome....

When I done mine, I just left the bracket on the back and dipped the back section in just far enough to submerse the bracket and rivets in the zinc solution and plated it. Then once plated I then masked the bracket and painted the bell section black. I never submersed the hole unit into the solution. This would NOT be good for the windings....!!!!
Monkey on, Monkey nuts!!!

Agreed PJ

I have the coils out though, so it's just the laminated core.

Think I agree with your approach though. One for next weekend!

So, I did this some time ago but didn't share. Not sure if there's anyone left, but here you go.

This is the start point with the coils removed. They are retained with two bent tabs. This is followed by a replate to get rid of the corrosion and provide a clean base for the paint where it's needed. I tried to avoid plating the laminated cores though as previously raised

Coil pack and clip, new grommets. Reassembly.
I replaced the original cover screws since these appear to be unique. I couldn't find an exact replica anywhere. Although it does look like it, it is a genuine mitsuba cover. Unfortunately the chrome man thought it looked better with the pressed logo polished out (...aaarrghhhh)  :)

All done. Be nice to find some new mount grommets, but they are easily changed
